Alex Sabados Memorial at CIBMX

For those that haven't heard yet, the Colorado BMX community was rocked this week by the death of Alex Sabados. After a long battle with brain cancer, Alex finally succumbed to the disease that he fought so bravely. In an effort to honor Alex and assist the Sabados family with the incredible medical bills they have incurred in their fight, Colorado Indoor BMX has purchased 200 Alex Sabados benefit wristbands (similar to the Live Strong wristbands) on behalf of the entire BMX community. Every racer that races this weekend will be given a wristband to wear during the race as a way to honor a truly amazing kid. There will be wristbands available for purchase for non-racers and those that wish to help the Sabados family. Additionally, we will hold a silent memorial lap for all racers and Alex's BMX team manager, PJ Dipentino, will offer words of remembrance before our main event on Saturday. Finally, for those that wish to attend the official services for Alex on Saturday morning, we will hold our race as long as possible to help make attendance a reality for those racers.

It is important to note that these gestures should be seen as contributions of the entire BMX community and not Colorado Indoor BMX. We have said it before, but the community made this track a reality through their support and we will honor and support one of our own together. Also, while this is a difficult and challenging time for many, we feel that it is important for everyone to come out and have as positive an experience as possible. We feel this way as we know in our hearts that if Alex were able, he would love nothing more than to be out on the track with his friends, family and teammates. We will honor his memory and spirit by doing just that.

Only a few days away!

Unbelievably, we are only a few days away from the February races and it looks to be an amazing weekend. We were so pleased and thankful for the great turnout from our first race and we are really looking forward to this weekend's races. We learned a few things from the first races and have decided to make a couple of adjustments to things based on what we learned. The most significant change will be running open practices by age group. We feel that this will be much safer for everyone and should open things up a bit as riders will be practicing with those closer in age and skill. Don't worry, we will be running plenty of practices and everyone will have tons of track time.

We will again be holding a potluck dinner after Saturday nights race and this potluck theme is "anything goes". Got a great recipe for Swedish meatballs? Bring em' on out. We will keep the track open after the races and during the dinner for additional practice time as well.

Sunday's race is the first double-point Colorado State Championship qualifier of the 2010 season. For those that are going after that State Champ number plate, this is your chance to get a points jump on the competition. We will begin building the track at 2pm on Friday afternoon and would love some able volunteers to help out. Volunteers, please bring your own rake and shovels if at all possible. As an incentive, we will be bringing pizza for all the hard working folks that help out. See you Friday!

As always, it is really helpful if racers pre-register. You can easily pre-register through this simple form. If you have a friend, family member, co-worker, etc. that has ever thought about checking out BMX racing, the indoor series is a great place to start. We will again be offering new racers a free one day ABA membership (normally $45.00) to give them the opportunity to experience our great sport. This race series is also a great chance for those crazy MTBers to get out and race in a different format. MTB riders are always welcome at CIBMX!

Finally, we couldn't end this message without recognizing all the great sponsors that have helped make this races series a successful reality. Please to a second to visit the sponsor page and support those that have supported all of us by keeping them in mind the next time you need one of their services. Thanks again to all for the AMAZING support!

THANK YOU!!!

Wow! What an amazing, amazing weekend! All we can say is a huge THANK YOU to everyone that made our opening weekend such a success. There were many people that did this and I don't think we can emphasize the importance of the combined contribution enough. We came to the cycling community a few months ago and did something that hadn't been done before - we asked everyone to prepay for race fees. The community responded by buying well over $1000.00 in CIB cards. We asked the community to pursue sponsors and the community responded by bringing in the key sponsors that helped make this a financial reality. We put a call out for volunteers to help build the track and we had a great, large group that came together and the track was built in one day! We had other tracks loan us equipment, we had a key volunteer from another track come out and help us with technology to get us through our first weekend. We asked other cycling communities and web sites to help us get the word out and they did without any hesitation at all. I say all this to make the point that this is the community's track and we should all be proud of what we were able to accomplish together. I know I've said it many times, but I really can't thank everyone enough! It was a GREAT day and it exceeded all of our expectations!!! We'll see everyone again in February!

CIBMX track and parking update

We are making great progress on the track! Thanks to all the volunteers that have come out to help.

One quick update about parking: We had originally suggested parking on the North side of the facility, but it now looks like the West side is much better (full concrete and little snow). This track is going to be awesome! Come out and race!

MTBers Welcome at CIBMX

One thing that we are trying to do with the new indoor track is open other cycling communities up to the sport of BMX racing. Given this, we have an open invitation to the vibrant CO MTB community to come out and race with us. As a point of reference, the MTB racing format that most closely resembles BMX racing would be 4X. We will be holding MTB "Open" races as well as BMX cruiser (24" + wheel size) races that MTBers can compete in. We have arranged with the major BMX racing sanctioning body, the American Bicycle Association (ABA) to allow MTB racers to practice and race on a free, one day ABA membership (practice/race fees would be extra) which is normally $45.00. If you are a MTBer that is jonesin' for a place to ride this winter, we invite you to join us for a great race series. We know that the CO MTB scene is very active and anything that you could do to help get this message out to the MTB community would be greatly appreciated.

See you at the races!!!
